THE DARK KNIGHT
BOOKS
HAUNTED: A NOVEL by CHUCK PALAHNIUK
This is a couple years old, but I just tore through this and
think it's one of the most wonderfully sickening books I've read in a long time.
I couldn't put it down. A bunch of writers are taken to a secret place where
they're kept for 90 days to create their masterpieces. Turns out they have some
pretty horrible stories to tell, and they decide to make their real life
situation even more horrible.
LIFE: A USER'S MANUAL by STEVE CULLISON
I'm all for giving up and coming humorists a hand, and Steve's
sometimes satirical and often dead on look on how to succeed in life is a lot
funnier than you'd think it'd be. The artwork, though sparse, looks like
something from an '80s era Macintosh videogame, but it's full of laughs. Advice
ranging from running for President to creative dating tips abound.
MEGO 8" SUPER HEROES: WORLD'S GREATEST TOYS
This gorgeous tome is a spectacular love letter to the great
super hero action figures made by Mego in the '70s. Any kid worth anything had
at least one of these. Tons of great history and giant full color glossy
pictures throughout make this a must have book for any fan of these fine toys.
Every piece of ever figure and multiple angle photography make
this a truly indispensable addition to an retroCRUSHers library.
WHAT IF #43 (1984)
Marvel Comics doesn't have the rights to reprint their
old Conan stories anymore, which is a shame, because this issue from
their sometimes great What If series was pretty great. This alternate
reality tale has the savage Conan getting stranded in the 20th
century. Immediately arrested, be breaks his chains and flees the
courtroom and quickly adapts to life on the streets, rising up to
become a gang leader/cocaine dealer before having a sword vs. shield
showdown with none other than Captain America. The ending is a bit
weak, but seeing Conan in a pimp suit walking a leopard down the
streets of New York City is worth tracking this down from your comic
shop's back issue box.
FINAL CRISIS: DC COMICS
3 issues in, I'm about ready to give up on this 7
issue Grant Morrison series, frankly. It's a jumbled mess of a story
that I don't care about. I love how DC keeps having these "Crisis"
series to sort out their jumbled history, and it just keeps making
things even more confusing. I'll likely give the collected work a
read when it's in paperback form, but I'll pass on the monthly issues
for now.

As comic book sidekicks go, Jimmy Olsen might not be the first
guy you think of, but he's a vastly underrated character that is instrumental
both in the history of Superman, and the catalyst for Jack Kirby to create some
of the most exciting characters in fiction.

THE
TOP 20 MOST ANNOYING SONGS
About a month ago we conducted a
poll of the worst songs of all time. With a staggering 4,000
responses, these are the results, as ranked by vote count. Sure
each one of these is somebody's favorite song, and without a
doubt you have some worse choices that aren't here, either.
There are certainly songs that are technically worse, but these
are those special bad songs that became popular and played so
many millions of times that you want to pound rusty nails into
your skull to make the noise stop. As the universal official
keepers of pop culture, it is retroCRUSH's duty and pleasure to
bring them to you. Plus we have videos
to watch for EACH ONE!
